Reflection
In the English Composition III course, we conducted a survey and explored the findings from the responses to the questionnaires. I learned a lot through this process. At the beginning of the semester, I expected the course to be focused on writing as usual, especially since students were not allowed to use AI for writing assistance. However, the course combined textbook knowledge, brainstorming with technology, and proactive research into an argumentative issue.
I realized the tremendous development of ChatGPT, and I was amazed by the results it provided, such as helping me conduct survey questions, organize my outline, and offer topic suggestions. When I gave clear and direct prompts, it responded with useful and thoughtful ideas, which helped me immensely. Based on my experience collaborating with ChatGPT, I came to appreciate how it can integrate data from the questionnaire, whether the responses were open-ended or closed-ended. Therefore, I now consider ChatGPT a marvelous tool for collecting and analyzing data.
Additionally, I learned a lot through inquiry-based learning, similar to how we used ChatGPT. Dr. Sherry assigned us to choose an issue to work on for the semester. Since I could select a topic I cared about, it motivated me to dive into research. In the process of finding information, I enhanced my ability to search for papers and resources on Google Scholar and other academic websites. This experience showed me that inquiry-based learning significantly fosters proactive studying.
One of the challenges I faced during the process was collecting respondents for the survey. Since my respondents were junior high school teachers, I had to forward the questionnaire to my school and teachers’ clubs on Facebook. Due to their busy schedules, only a few teachers completed the survey, which caused me some difficulty for a while. As a result, I was truly grateful for the teachers who took the time to fill out the questionnaire. In addition to directly contacting teachers, I also asked my friends to share the URL link with their teachers. Thanks to these participants, I was able to collect enough responses, and I sincerely appreciated their enthusiasm and help.
The advice given by my classmates was valuable. It helped me understand whether my thoughts were clearly expressed in the study and provided direction on how to improve my essay. Dr. Sherry's feedback was also priceless. She pointed out some blind spots that I had missed, offered professional research suggestions and taught me how to make the best use of ChatGPT. Thanks to their guidance, I was able to complete my project and have a wonderful ending to the semester.
In conclusion, I have gained the skills to complete projects by utilizing AI in a proper way. Moreover, I learned how to write an organized, logical academic essay according to the instructions from my professor, peers, and the textbook. Overall, this course was fulfilling and contributed greatly to my personal growth.
